Unit 1: Historic Thinking & NC RegionsUsing lessons and ideas from Stanford University, we will spend time one this unit answering the following Essential Questions:
1. How do Historians learn about and think about the past? 2-What words are used when identifying Historical Thinking? 3-How do we think critically about and analyze the past? 4- What are the benefits of finding and using a variety of sources to learn about the past? 5-EQ:How do NC's geographic regions set the stage for NC history? |
Unit 2: Contact & ConsequencesUsing supplemental sources from LearnNC.org and Ch. 2 of our textbook, students will focus on the culture of Native Americans, the events of initial contact between Europeans and Native Americans, and rationale/outcomes of establishing an English colony at Roanoke.
1.What was the Colombian Exchange and how did it impact Native American and European life ? 2. How did the characteristics of Native Culture evolve over time after European contact? 3-What were the experiences for colonists and native Americans during the three attempts to settle Roanoke Island? 4-What is the historical significance of the English attempts to settle Roanoke? 5-How did a permanent settlement in NC begin after the failed attempts at Roanoke? |
Unit 3: English ColoniesUnit 3 will focus on the establishment of Jamestown in 1607, the growth of the Carolina Colony & its split into two separate colonies. Within this context, students will learn about colonial life, government, economics, conflict with natives, and establishing a base for raw materials for England.
Essential Questions include: 1. How is Jamestown Historically Significant? 2. What were the causes and effects of the experiences colonists and native Americans endured during the colonial period? 3. Which groups settled in the American Colonies & why did settlers come to America? 4. How could the Carolina Colony be described? 5. What affect did pirates and indians have on North Carolina's beginnings? 6. How did the arrival of various immigrant groups effect the progress of the North Carolina Colony? 7.What were the distinctive characteristics of the Southern, Middle, and New England Colonies? 8. In what ways did the establishment of the colonies' government and economic systems set the stage for conflict with England? |
